Last week we took our voluntary wardens out to Welney Wetland Centre for the afternoon. 42 (or was it 43?) of us went on the trip after a delightful buffet organised by Kirsty the Ranger.
Despite the very high water levels, there was plenty to keep us busy for a couple of hours. We shopped, drank tea and went across the road witness the afternoon feeding frenzy. Because of the deep water, the warden had to wear a full dry suit and, even then, could only reach halfway along the gallery frontage.
The deep water was not ideal for dabbling ducks but there was a lot to watch. The highlight for me was the site of three rare bean geese from the visitors' centre which later gave us a fly-past at the observatory.
The trip was funded by the Friends of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.
