Cows in the Meadow

Ten English Longhorn heifers arrived at Paxton this morning. They will be staying in the Great Meadow until the autumn. These cattle belong to a farmer called Stephen Wright who has cattle on several other nature reserves. The cattle are supposed to munch their way through the coarse vegetation, depositing little "meadow-muffins" as they go, and making other little micro-habitats with their hooves, especially near the ditches.

These old breeds look perfect in the landscape as they are the type of cattle you would see in a landscape painting by Constable.
